Dancing With the Stars ’ Jenna Johnson Had No Problem Picking Her Wedding Dress
Dancing With the Stars’ Jenna Johnson knew her dress was the one almost as fast as new her fiancé, Val Chmerkovskiy, was. The dancer revealed Friday that she said yes to the first dress she tried on at Kleinfeld Bridal.
Johnson, who will be on an upcoming episode of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, spoke with People about her dress shopping experience.
“Before even looking for my dress, I knew I wanted something timeless and classic,” Johnson said. “I wanted something that I felt confident and beautiful in. I didn’t want to look like a princess—I wanted to look like a queen!”
While she didn’t reveal any details about her look, she said it would different from what fans of DWTS typically see her in. “I am so blessed to be able to have gorgeous dresses made for me every week on DWTS. So I also wanted to be certain that I didn’t get anything that felt like a costume or ballroom dress,” she said.
Even though Johnson’s profession makes her no stranger to luxury threads, she was still excited by her wedding dress shopping experience, which she gushed about in two Instagram posts. “I still can’t get over yesterday,” she wrote alongside a behind-the-scenes look at her SYTTD episode. “I want to give a ginormous THANK YOU to @randyfenoli & @lisasyttd & the whole team of @sayyes_tlc for making all my dreams come true! It was truly a magical day.”
She posted another picture of herself in the bridal salon beaming with that bridal glow. The process, the dancer explained, began long before she got to the store: “I was so looking forward to it. So I went onto their website to have an idea of what they had and what I knew I wanted to try on.”
Her research skills paid off; she went with the first dress she tried on. “Ironically enough, the first dress I tried on was the one,” Johnson said. “I had picked it out while looking around, and I just knew it was unique and something I would love to wear.”
She tried on a total of four dresses just to make sure—but when you know, you know. The appointment, which she attended along with her mother, Tammy, close family friend Stacy, future mother-in-law, Larissa, and future sister-in-law Peta Murgatroyd, reportedly lasted a few hours.
As for other wedding details, things are slowly coming together. The bride-to-be is juggling wedding planning duties with being on the DWTS tour but is happy to have her dress off her list. “I feel like things are finally starting to fall into place,” Johnson said. “My dress was a big box I wanted to check off, so now that I have it I can breathe and enjoy the rest of our planning. Now I’m just excited and ready for the big day.”
The couple hasn’t said much about what they want their wedding day to look like except that they “just want it to be a beautiful celebration for us and our families to enjoy.” But Chmerkovskiy has noted that they are looking to stay in budget, therefore, not everyone will be getting an invite. “I’m just calling friends and telling them that they’re not getting invited and that it’s not personal...trying to decrease the budget for this wedding as much as possible,” the groom-to-be joked to Us Weekly a few months back. “All jokes aside, obviously, some of my friends will be invited.”
No matter who makes the guest list, Johnson is still enjoying the process with her fiancé by her side. “It’s been so enjoyable designing and planning our wedding. Is been a fun little adventure together,” she admitted. “Honestly, as long as Val’s by my side, I will be the happiest girl in the world.”
