Farm Meets Formal at This Glamorous Wedding in Ojai
The night Brittany Peterson and Leif Dautch first met, they almost didn't. "We were at the same party in October of 2012 and caught each other's eye across the bar," Brittany remembers. "But neither of us got up the courage to introduce ourselves before the party ended." They parted ways, with Brittany celebrating a friend's birthday and Leif going to the movies. Each thought they'd missed their chance and convinced their friends to head to a local dive bar for a nightcap. But as soon as Leif walked into the bar, he saw the last person he expected: the girl he'd been too nervous to talk to earlier. "We spent hours talking in the corner, long after our friends had gone home," Brittany says.
Three years later, the pair was headed to Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving with Brittany's family. Little did she know, Leif had arranged for his parents and siblings to join them. "There was a snowstorm in the middle of the day, then Leif convinced me to take a walk down the pier with him," says the bride. "He proposed just as the clouds parted, with my cousin photographing the beautiful moment."
Leif and Brittany love California and knew the groom's childhood home would be the perfect place for a wedding, so on October 22, 2016, 220 guests gathered in Ojai. "Earthtrine Farm has so much personal significance, as well as stunning views and three distinct places where we could celebrate," Brittany describes. The couple let the setting provide a natural farm feel, then used the decor to layer in formal details. In everything from the relaxed open-air ceremony among oak trees to the dressed-up cocktail hour in the barn, followed by the formal dinner in a clear-top tent, a mix of blush, copper, and rose gold gave this farm wedding a totally glamorous twist. A blush, ivory, and copper invitation suite set the tone, with modern calligraphy mixed in between the traditional fonts.
This strapless lace Anna Maier gown was the very first dress Brittany tried on. "I felt like myself as soon as I put it on," she explains. She set off the gown's embroidered floral texture with blush Prada sandals and a bouquet of white and blush roses, garden roses, and peonies.
To match the feminine color palette, Brittany's bridesmaids all wore strapless blush gowns from Amsale and carried nosegays of white roses. Leif wore a true-blue suit, while his groomsmen wore navy. All the men donned blush ties to coordinate with the 'maids.
The open-air ceremony took place beneath two gorgeous oak trees. Arrangements of hydrangeas and roses flanked the aisle, while guests were seated on simple wooden benches.
Brittany's cousin served as one of three ring bearers and took his job so seriously. "Throughout the ceremony, he kept asking his parents when it was time to give me the rings. He didn't know the ones he had were fake!" laughs the bride.
"Music is incredibly important to us," explains the bride. "So much so that in the middle of the ceremony, Leif picked up his fiddle to play my favorite song!"
"I work in events, so the planning process was really enjoyable for me," says Brittany. "Our planner, Michel Brodowsky of Michel B. Events, was a big part of that. She made sure my vision came to life with her creativity, management, and incredible contacts."
As guests arrived at cocktail hour, they found their table assignments tied to wooden honey dippers. "My dad is a beekeeper, so the place cards were jars of honey from our property," says Brittany. Guests sipped cocktails around the barn, choosing between the Marin Mule and the Ojai Margarita. The bar was decorated with marquee letters flaunting the newlyweds' initials.
Chandeliers hung from the clear-topped tent, with tables arranged around an oak-and-white-checkered dance floor. Linens alternated between blush, white, and sequins, with garlands of greenery tucked between pillar candles. Round tables were topped with taller arrangements of hydrangeas and roses.
The couple wanted to incorporate as much of the farm as possible, so all of the vegetables, herbs, and citrus on the farm-to-table menu were grown right on the property.
For dessert, Leif and Brittany served a sleek three-tiered red-velvet cake with vanilla frosting and raspberry filling, displayed atop a box of blush and white roses.
"It was amazing to watch the sun set over the mountains through the open-air tent," says Brittany. She and Leif loved seeing their vision come to life. "Follow your heart when it comes to your wedding and the day will be like watching a dream become a reality!"
