Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Announced Their Baby's Name
Move over KJ Apa, there's a new Archie in town, and he's already poised to take your crown (literally).
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed the name of their newborn son on Wednesday, surprising many royal fans but seemingly thrilling Riverdale fans. The royal baby's name was announced as "Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor," according to the Sussex's Instagram.
They shared the unexpected name alongside a new candid photo of the tot meeting his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. "This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle. The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess’ mother were also present for this special occasion," the photo's caption continued.
Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was also in the shot looking adoringly upon her grandson. Ragland has been by Meghan's side since before Markle gave birth on Monday.
The name Archie doesn't seem to have any royal connections; according to the Evening Standard Archie has German origins and means "truly brave" (the royal lineage can be traced back through Germany). The outlet also notes that Archie is a popular U.K. name, frequenting lists of top boys' names for many years.
And royal reporter Emily Andrews says the couple picked it because they just liked it! (Relatable.)
Despite that, Archie never appeared on prediction lists for Meghan and Harry's son. Instead, Arthur, Philip, James, and Albert were the most expected boy names, People previously reported. Even Spencer, as a nod to Princess Diana's family name, crossed minds as a potential option.
But leave it to Meghan and Harry to continue breaking royal tradition with a name choice—they have done so since their wedding and well into the pregnancy. They even opted to skip the traditional post-birth photo op, instead scheduling a photo-call two days afterward, and chose to announce Meghan had gone into labor after she had given birth in an effort to protect their privacy. They've also moved to Frogmore Cottage to keep press at bay and continue to make announcements such as the baby's birth on their social media accounts instead of through traditional palace press releases.
Of course, there may not be a huge royal connection with the baby's name, but there is an obvious connection to the very popular Archie comics; the titular character sports red hair much like Prince Harry. Perhaps the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are big fans of the CW show or comic books? (Please begin the prayers now that their second child will be named "Jughead.")
It's also somewhat surprising that Meghan and Harry opted to give Archie the last name "Mountbatten-Windsor" considering his cousins George, Charlotte, and Louis have adopted the last name "Cambridge" in school instead of the more proper "Mountbatten-Windsor." Even Prince William and Prince Harry employed the last name "Wales" in school rather than the longer title.
Wednesday was a big day for the newest royal; he also met the press for the first time during a photo-call at Windsor Castle, where fans got their first look at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's adorable son.
In addition to the photos taken by the press, the royal Instagram account shared more candid pics taken by Chris Allerton—including a very sweet one of Harry, holding Archie, and Meghan walking together, as the duchess sweetly looks upon her husband with her hand on his back.
"Today The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to share their first public moment as a family," the photo's caption reads. "They are so incredibly grateful for the warm wishes and support they’ve received from everyone around the world, since welcoming their son two days ago."
During Wednesday's photo-call, the public learned more about Meghan's transition into motherhood—Harry previously spoke to the press on Monday, joking about already losing sleep as a dad.
“It’s magic. It’s pretty amazing. I have the best two guys in the world, so I’m really happy,” Markle said. “[The baby] has the sweetest temperament. He’s really calm,” she added.
